Dash Code was xCard-like?

Post by OpenXTalkPaul »

I read somewhere that Dashcode was a bit HyperCard-ish. It was a tool for making Dashboard widgets. I never tried it. From what I understand Apple basically neglected it and then killed it, just like they did with HyperCard, Quart Composer, and some other great tools they let wither away.

Yes, Apple very much wanted to steer everyone down the xcode path. xCode or nothing as far as they were concerned. I remember seeing an internal memo at the time which detailed "the rationalisation of disperate IDEs". The logic, if you can call it that, was to encourage everyone to use an identical template (for what was at the time) the cocaUI toolkit.

They have a habit of killing off anything they don't approve of, usually by buying it up and then promptly discontinuing it.

I'm sure the only reason that didn't happen to LC is that it also has a windows and Linux version. If it'd had been mac-only, I'm sure it would have been in Apple's crosshairs.
