Re: HyperStudio
Did HyperStudio actually include an xTalk language? I was aware of it but I never tried it because from it's advertising it seemed like it was a HyperCard without the HyperTalk, solely for use as multimedia audthoring tool?
I guess it can't hurt to give it a try now, since I'm dusting off my G4 to look at Oracle Media Objects.

Oh they're still in existence, and they have an HTML5 engine too!

Re: HyperStudio
Not really HyperTalk, but "Rog" previously worked on SuperCard,
and, going on his subsequent 'puff' "Roger Wagner's HyperStudio"
left there as his EGO was getting hungry.

Re: HyperStudio
HyperStudio was an Apple IIGS product initially. You could run it today on a vintage IIGS or using a IIGS emulator like Sweet16.

Re: HyperStudio
Free versions for Windows and Mac here: visually very impressive.
https://www.mackiev.com/hyperstudio/select.html
Versions 5 and up are made in such a way that one CANNOT get at the underlying LOGO language.
32-bit only.

Re: HyperStudio
Here's an article from 2008 (Yup: 2008), that, oddly enough, raises some points that are still relevant right now in 2023 (um, err, 2024), and as such warrants reading:
https://www.mackiev.com/hyperstudio/reviews/nzmac.html
My most 'lumpy' quote is this one:
"Of course, there is a flip-side to such a superb new version of HyperStudio after all these years. You might want (as I did) to dust of your old HyperStudio stacks and take a look at them. But the ability to play older stacks isn't guaranteed. For example, HyperLogo, a scripting language that could be used within previous versions is not present."
emphases are mine.
This one contains a lie, and a quite important lie at that:
https://www.mackiev.com/hyperstudio/rev ... topia.html
'He told me good news: HyperStudio is back with a vengeance. It has all the old features and a bunch of new ones, such as podcasting and movie-making capabilities."
One of the 'old features' has gone: the whole PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE.

This made me laugh . . . making something simple to help model for something to be made in LiveCode:

Re: HyperStudio
- Robust drag and drop capabilities with a "tear-off" Library palette with access to both built-in and user objects, graphics, audio, animation & video.
- A tear-off Layout palette with icons for grid, snap, guideline, alignment controls, flipping & rotating orientation
- A tear-off Tools palette with a color picker expanded to handle gradients and textures very nicely, including a range of presets as well as a chooser button that will take you to your photo library.
- a story board mode to display small versions of your cards and move them around to reorder. Also a toggle to show a visual card index.
- conversion back and forth between bit-mapped images and graphic objects
- The ability to magnify the screen in real time as well as a full screen presentation mode and slide show options
- export to HTML 5, as a video podcast (M4V), QuickTime Movie (mov) or image sequence (png).

Re: HyperStudio
Yeah, I don't get it. I've done enough porting back and forth between xTalks and other things that I suspect what we're seeing there is an initial enthusiasm that will fade as the workflow progresses.richmond62 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2024 10:46 am This made me laugh . . . making something simple to help model for something to be made in LiveCode:

Re: HyperStudio
I know some people used HyperCard as a 'prototyping' tool back in the day, I would think there's some users that use LC as a proto-typing tool for something else now. I never even consider a tool to prototype PRIOR to building it in LC/OXT. Seems an alien concept to me.
I will say that Hyperstudio had some nice hand-holding 'wizards' which might be nice to have something similar in OXT for beginners and youngsters, not 'No-Code' but more like pre-coded examples templates for some basic tasks or use-cases (like a basic 'powerpoint' Slide-Show use for example).

Re: HyperStudio
To be honest I think of LiveCode and HyperStudio as things that started out almost identically . . .
Correct me if I am wrong, but I have a feeling that Roger Wag made HyperStudio as a rip-off from HyperCard, but using a modified form of LOGO as the underlying programming language.
So LiveCode, as the main successor to HyperCard (via MetaCard) . . . (let's regard Supercard as an 'also ran' as it appears to be fading into the sunset at the moment) has developed the HyperTalk language into something a lot more capable than what it was in HyperCard.
HyperStudio has both tarted up the interface and added lots of premade, drag-and-drop objects, and either killed off or locked away its programming language.
Of course, with LC/OXT one can do ALL the things
(well: movies? decent image rotation?)
that HyperStudio can do: but quite a lot of what HyperStudio can do requires the xTalk programmer with LC/OXT to do a spot of heavy lifting.
Of course this means that with LC/OXT one is less restrained as to how far one can go.

I'd also point out that SuperCard and others added a lot of additions early on (circa 1989). I think MC was more of a Unix clone of SC than it was a clone of HC. Also, HyperCard itself became a more capable xTalk with additions available in the form of XCMDs/XFCNs. In fact most things added in MC/RunRev were doable in HyperCard in the 1990s (and I suspect 'inspired' many of those RunRev additions). I'm talking about using 'Arrays', Read/Write of arbitrary Binary data on disk and those sorts of things, movies, color-picts, buttons with color icns, etc.
Is there a problem with image rotation? Are its results not high enough quality?richmond62 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2024 1:04 pm Of course, with LC/OXT one can do ALL the things

I'm working on Movies on Linux problem full blast right now (while also learning a bunch about various GNOME APIs).
I'm not aware of specific player problems on Mac, WIn, or mobile.

And getting "there" slowly:
